On Sunday (May 26), the Israeli army launched an airstrike on a refugee camp declared as a ‘safe area’ in Rafah, Gaza Strip. At least 45 Palestinians, including women and children, were killed and about 25 injured in the attack by the occupying forces on the refugee camp built with tents.
The attack in Rafah caused a storm of condemnation around the world. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called it a massacre. He vowed to do “everything within his power” to hold Israel accountable. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed anger over the attack. Pointing out that there is no safe place for Palestinians in Rafah, he called for an immediate end to Israeli operations there.
European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said, “Israel must comply with ICZ orders to stop operations in Rafah.”
Netanyahu responded to the widespread criticism of the attack on the Rafah refugee camp. In a speech to the Israeli parliament on Monday (May 27), he referred to the attack as a “tragic accident”. He also said that it will be investigated.
Netanyahu also said, “It is important for Israel to be vigilant in every possible way to protect civilians in Gaza.” However, he said that he will continue to fight against Hamas in Gaza.
