Prime Minister’s warning to anti-quota activists

On the issue of anti-quota movement, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that there is no obstacle to peaceful movement demanding the abolition of quota system, but she warned that violence is not an excuse. Besides, the Prime Minister also commented that the government has nothing to do until the court’s verdict on the quota reform issue.

He said these things in response to a journalist’s question at a press conference about his visit to China at Ganobhaban on Sunday afternoon.

The Prime Minister said that I canceled the quota in 2018 because of the agitation and violence. He also thinks that there has been a problem due to the cancellation of quota.

Sheikh Hasina said, once they (students) were doing such a movement. Movement is not violence. Vandalism, arson. Then I got annoyed and said that I dropped all the quotas. Then I said that if the quota is removed, see what happens. Now see what has happened?

He said, those who are agitating do not obey the law, the court does not obey the law. They don’t know what the constitution is. The agitators have no idea how a government works.

The Prime Minister said, they should know what our constitution says. Now the court has given them a chance. Let them go to court. But they want to collect their demands on the street instead of going to court.

He said, the solution of the quota should be through the court. The judgment of the court must be obeyed. And if you don’t mean it, then there is nothing to do. Let them continue to protest on the streets. But can’t do anything destructive.

Sheikh Hasina said, if they want to hurt someone. If they want to attack the neck of the police, the law will take its own course, I have nothing to do here.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina went to Beijing on an official visit on Monday at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang. He returned home on Thursday. During her stay in Beijing, Sheikh Hasina held a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He also held a bilateral meeting with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang.

Bangladesh and China signed and renewed 21 cooperation documents after a delegation-level bilateral meeting on Wednesday. Most of these are memorandums of understanding. The meeting emphasized on strong development and economic cooperation between these two Asian countries. Both Bangladesh and China have signed seven declarations including the completion of a joint feasibility study on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
