There was no boundary, not even an over throw. Still five runs in one ball! Yes, such a strange thing happened on the fourth day of the Ireland-Zimbabwe only Test.
Hosts Ireland left-handed batsman Andy McBrien hits a cover drive off Richard Ngaraver. The ball rolls towards the boundary line. Zimbabwean fielder Tendai Chatara ran to catch the ball.
Also reach the ball before the ball touches the boundary line. But Chatara pushed the ball behind himself and went out of the boundary line. Go far beyond boundary lines and billboards to maintain body balance. McBrien and his teammate Lorcan Tucker switched sides five times before re-entering the field and taking the ball in hand to throw.
Interestingly, if Chatara had not intercepted the ball, Ireland would have scored four runs from the boundary. But even after blocking the ball, he ended up with more than the boundary and five runs.
However, this is not the first time that 5 runs have been scored in one ball in Test cricket without an over throw. Australia’s Craig McDermott did such an act against Sri Lanka in 1996. After 28 years, that memory returned in the Ireland-Zimbabwe Test.
It should be noted that the Irish made history by defeating Zimbabwe by 4 wickets in the only Test. It was only the second time they played in white at home that they got their first victory.
