Anti-junta rebels have launched a drone attack on Mandalay’s Thara-U International Airport, Myanmar’s second busiest airport. The attack was carried out with six “suicide drones” on Thursday afternoon (September 10). Immediately after the attack, all flight operations at the airport were temporarily suspended, which remains in effect today (September 11).

Myanmar Airways International, the country’s state-run airline, confirmed the attack on its Facebook page. An official at the airline’s banking department told Reuters that all flights to and from Thara-U airport on September 11 and 12 had been cancelled due to the closure.

Myanmar’s state-run daily Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Friday that Myanmar’s pro-democracy armed political party, the People’s Defense Force (PDF), launched six first-person-view suicide drones targeting Thara-U International Airport on Thursday.

The attack disrupted some domestic flight schedules, but there were no casualties and no damage to any vehicles or airport runways, according to a report by Global New Light of Myanmar.

Local media in Myanmar reported that a Myanmar military fighter jet was at Thara-U Airport when the drone was fired at.

Political unrest began in Myanmar on February 1, 2021, after the military seized power by overthrowing the government led by Myanmar’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. After nearly 5 years of military rule, elections were held in Myanmar in December 2025, and former army chief General Min Aung Hlaing became president, but stability has not yet been achieved in the country.
